Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II, the temple was constructed to symbolize Mount Meru, a sacred mountain in Buddhism considered to be the center of all physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes. The temple itself is covered with stone carvings and has more than 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating interiorly.

DAY 03: SIEM REAP (B,D)

After breakfast, look around the “Small Circuit” of temples in a tuk tuk. Start with Ta Phrom. This iconic temple is twined with incredible tree-roots as nature has slowly reclaimed it over the centuries. Originally constructed as a Mahayana Buddhist temple in the late 12th century by Jayavarman VII, it apparently took 80,000 people to look after it, and has now been left as it was found in the 19th century. Though well-known, it can still make visitors feel like an explorer of old, crumbling masonry and overgrowth of vines, trees and roots convey the romance of discovering a truly lost civilization. Nearby is the 12th century Buddhist monastery of Banteay Kdei and the old bathing pond of Sra Srang - a tranquil area where Khmer Royalty used  to bathe.
After this, head to the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire - the ancient city of Angkor Thom. Enter the South Gate, which is carved with four giant faces and discover more this perfectly-square ancient walled-city.
Bayon temple sits right in the centre of the city, a magnificent masterpiece of 12th century Khmer craftsmanship. Its 54 towers represent the 54 provinces of the Khmer empire, and the temple also has amazing, detailed bas-reliefs at The Terraces of The Leper King and of The Elephants.

Take a boat out to the lake village of Kampong Phluk to see its stilt-houses. Pass by flooded forests and floating houses along the way, witness how people adapt to life on this fertile body of water. Enjoy a picnic lunch in one of these local houses.

After that, visit the Landmine Museum whose founder was a child soldier during the Khmer Rouge regime and is working today as a de-miner. In order to promote mine awareness and education, the museum serves as a rescue center for a number of landmine amputee children.
