Thailand is the country in Southeast Asia most visited by tourists for myriad of reasons: from thick jungles as green as can be, crystal blue waters that feel more like a warm bath than a swim in the ocean, to food that can curl your nose hairs while tap dancing across your taste buds. Exotic, yet safe; cheap, yet equipped with every modern amenity you need, there is something for every interest and every price bracket, from beach front backpacker bungalows to some of the best luxury hotels in the world.

Coming to Thailand to witness how busy and noisy the capital Bangkok with its fast pace of living is; a lively and exciting Pattaya with its sexy shows that can be hardly found anywhere else; a precious pearl-shaped Phuket island with its white sandy beaches; an exotic Phang Nga Bay where James Bond film was shot; a mountainous Chiangmai with ancient temples and their huge statues of Buddha.

Despite the heavy flow of tourism, Thailand retains its quintessential Thai-ness, with a culture and history all its own and a carefree people famed for their smiles and their fun-seeking sanuk lifestyle. Many travellers come to Thailand and extend their stay well beyond their original plans and others never find a reason to leave. Whatever your “cup of tea” is, they know how to make it in Thailand.

    LANGUAGE

    Speaking languages:

Official language: Thai (ภาษาไทย), which is very similar and to a large extent.

    Foreign languages: English, Chinese

The most popular languages for tourist guides: English, Chinese, Japanese, German, etc...

    Dialects
Some parts of Thailand have dialects of Thai which are nearly incomprehensible to speakers of standard Thai, though most people in these areas will be able to converse in standard Thai if needed.

    CURRENCY

    * Official currency in Thailand: baht, (THB, ฿), written in Thai as บาท or บ. There are six coins and six notes:

    - 25 and 50 satang (cent, copper colour) coins - nearly worthless and only readily accepted (and handed out) by buses, supermarkets and 7-11s

    - 1, 5 (silver colour), 2 (gold) and 10 baht (silver/gold) coins

    - 20 (green), 50 (blue), 100 (red), 500 (purple) and 1000 (grey-brown) baht notes

    * The most useful bills tend to be 20s and 100s, as many small shops and stalls don't carry much change. Please note that taxi drivers also like to pull the "no change" trick; if caught, hop into the nearest convenience store and make a small purchase.

(Beware of 1000-baht notes, as counterfeits are not uncommon: feel the embossing, look for the watermark and tilt to see color-changing ink to make sure the note is real).

    METHOD OF PAYMENT

    * ATMs can be found in all cities and large towns, and international withdrawals are not a problem. When using a debit card, an ATM will typically provide a much better exchange rate than a money exchange counter, and this is especially the case if you have a card that does not charge a transaction fee for overseas withdrawals.

    * ATMs are available at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK) after collecting your bag and clearing customs, and while it is advisable to arrive with a small amount of baht if possible, you may obtain cash from an ATM after landing as well.

    * One notable money exchanger is SuperRich, with branches in Bangkok at Silom, Ratchadamri, Khao San Road and Chatuchak. No fees are charged and the exchange rate is typically better than at ATMs (even before you consider ATM and your local bank fees), with a very small buy/sell spread.

    * More remote areas (including smaller islands) don't have banks or ATMs, so cash or traveller's checks are essential. Many hotels and guest houses will change money for guests, but hefty commissions and poor rates may apply. US dollars in small bills (1s, 5s, and 20s) are invaluable for onward travel to neighbouring countries other than Malaysia, but are only useful in Thailand for exceptional purchases (eg paying visa fees for Cambodia).

    * Credit cards are widely accepted in the tourist industry, at restaurants, shopping malls and shops catering to tourists. Fraud is regrettably common though, so use them sparingly and tell your bank in advance, so your card doesn't get locked down because you are using it. Some businesses add a surcharge (usually 2-3%) if you're paying by credit card; in this case, it can turn out cheaper to pay them in cash.

Note; Yellow Ayudhya (Krungsri) ATM's should be avoided. Not only do they charge 150 THB surcharge, the exchange rate is horrible.

    EXCHANGE MONEY
You can exchange your money at the airport before leaving, or at banks and official exchange centers in Thailand. It is strongly recommended that you do not exchange money in the black market or in street.

    INTERNET

Internet cafés are widespread and most are inexpensive. Prices as low as 15 baht/hour are commonplace, and speed of connection is generally reasonable but many cafes close at midnight. If you plan to go online for a short time you should first ask if there is a minimum charge. Higher prices prevail in major package-tourist destinations (60 baht/hour is typical, 120 baht/hour is not unusual). Islands with multiple Internet cafés include Ko Phi Phi (Don), Ko Lanta (Yai), Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Tao, Ko Chang (Trat), Ko Samet (Rayong), Ko Si Chang (Chonburi), and of course Phuket.

Keyloggers are all too often installed on the computers in cheap cafes, so be on your guard if using online banking, stock broking, or even PayPal. Using cut and paste to enter part of your password may defeat some of them. Or typing part of the user name and password inside the text input field (for password or username) then clicking outside of it some place in the browser window and typing some characters and then clicking back into the text input field and continuing to type the other part and doing this several times. Otherwise take your own laptop to the Internet cafe.

    TRANSPORT

    - Airlines are the most popular transport means to and from Thailand.

Please visit this website for more information about airlines in Thailand:

    - Other means of transportation:

1.By Railway: State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has a 4,000-km network covering most of the country, from Chiang Mai in the north all the way to (and beyond) the Malaysian border in the south. Compared to buses, most trains are relatively slow and prone to delays, but safer. You can pick up fruits, snacks and cooked food from hawkers at most stations.

     2. By road: Unlike its neighbours (except Malaysia), Thai traffic moves on the left side of the road and Thai cars generally right-hand drive. All official road directional signs are written in both Thai and English.

     3. By bus: this is the major method of transportation for people, freight and small parcels, the most popular method for long-distance travels. Tour and VIP class long -distance buses tend to be luxurious, while city and other class buses are often colorful with paint schemes and advertising.

     4. By boat:Boats are an indispensable way of getting around many parts in Thailand

     - Traditionally, there are long-tailed boat- a long, thin wooden boats with the propeller at the end of a long tail stretching from the boat.

     - Modernly, air-conditioned speedboats, sometimes ferries (departing every 30 minutes) are used to run from the Surat Thari to popular islands like Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan. However, buses, trains and airplanes are preferred for truly long-distance journeys as they are faster and safer.

     5. Alternative transport: tuk-tuk, taxi, van (minibus), motorbike taxi, songthaew (truck-based vehicles with a pair of bench seats in the back, one on either side).

At night the krathongs are set adrift on a nearby river or pond, as an offering to the spirit of the water to wash away the sins. According to an ancient proverb, when a boy and a girl float a krathong together, they will be lovers either in this life or the next.

Travel is not just about visiting, It’s about experiencing. Try to get beneath the skin of the country: this can take any shapes or forms. It might be a culinary adventure or a walk on the wild side. It could be a cultural encounter or perhaps spiritual enlightenment. The followings are some suggested tips:

    DOs:

    1.  Wait for your host and hostess to introduce you to the other guests. This allows everyone to understand your status relative to their own, and thus know who performs the wai and how low the head should be bowed.
    2. The traditional Thai form of greeting is wai-  to press your hands together in front of your body and bow slightly. These days, the Western customs of shaking hands has almost completely taken over.
    3. Respect local dress standards: shorts to the knees, women’s tops covering the shoulder, particularly at religious sites. Always remove your shoes before entering a temple. Nude sunbathing is considered totally inappropriate, even on beaches.
    4. Step over the threshold rather than on it. This is an old custom that may be dying out with younger Thais, but erring on the side of conservatism is always a good idea.
    5. Kissing, cuddling and similar behaviors are frowned upon if in public- especially amongst older Thais. Yougner Thais are unlikely to be as shocked, but to avoid positive discomfort, avoid the behavior.
    6. Smoking in the streets is illegal- you can be fined 2,000baht.
    7. Dropping litter in the streets is illegal- the same fine applies.

    * If you are invited to a Thai's house:
    5. Arrive close to the appointed time, although being a few minutes late will not cause offence.
    6. Check to see if the host is wearing shoes. If not, remove yours before entering the house.

    * Table manners
    7. A fork and spoon are the usual eating utensils. However, noodles are often eaten with chopsticks. The spoon is held in the right hand and the fork in the left. The fork is used to guide food onto the spoon. Sticky rice, a northern Thai delicacy, is often eaten with the fingers of the right hand.
    8. Most meals are served as buffets or with serving platters in the centre of the table family- style.
    9. You may begin eating as soon as you are served.
    10. Leave a little food on your plate after you have eaten to show that you are full. Finishing everything indicates that you are still hungry.
    11. Watch your body language and facial expressions, as these will be believed over your words.

    DON’Ts:
    1. Don't show much money, jewelry, or expensive belongings while walking around in big cities or even when you take a ride by motorbike taxi (xe ôm) which may attract the pick-pockets.
    2. Don’t eat much raw vegetable and  drink ice on streets.
    3. Don’t drink water from the tap
    4. Don’t miss Thai traditional local food
    5. Do not exchange money on the street.
    6. Don’t wear singlets, shorts, skirts or dresses, or revealing clothes to temples or pagodas.
    7. Never leave rice on your plate as it is considered wasteful. The words for food and      rice are the same. Rice has an almost mystical significance in addition to its humdrum 'daily bread' function.
    8. Never take the last bite from the serving bowl.
    9. Do not lick your fingers.
    10. Do not engage in purchase of wild animals whether protected or not. Aside from the moral issues, punishments are very harsh.

PATTAYATHAI VISAS CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS BELOW:

    1. 30 Days Stamp and Visa on Arrival Day:
    * This “30 day stamp”, also known as “Visa Exemption Scheme”, is not a visa; it is actually an exemption scheme to allow a foreigner of certain nationality to stay in the Kingdom without having to obtain a visa at the Thai embassy or Consulate before his departure to the country. This stamp is valid for 30 days and it’s stamped at the qualified foreigner’s passport at the passport control booth at the airport. The 30-day visa is granted provided that the foreigner is holding a return flight ticket with him or an on-ward journey ticket. The 30-day stamp can be extended for 7 days at the Thai immigration office on or before its expiration date. A corresponding government fee is charged to complete the procedure.

    * Another visa obtained in Thailand is the ‘Visa on Arrival’. This visa applies to certain nationalities such as Indian and Chinese, those nationalities which are not qualified under the Visa exemption Scheme. These nationals have to fill out a visa application upon arrival, show proof of financial capability to support their stay and pay the visa application fee prior to receiving the visa. The visa is valid for 15 days.

    2. Tourist Visa (TR):
This type of visa is for a foreigner to be allowed to stay in the Kingdom of Thailand as a tourist for a period that is not longer than 90 days. You can apply for this Tourist Visa at the Thai Embassy of your current residence. Mostly, the Thai Embassy will grant you a Tourist Visa with a maximum period of 60 days. However, once you are already in Thailand and wish to stay longer, you can get an extension for another period of 30 days at a Thai Immigration Office. Moreover, this type of visa can be converted to another type of long term Non-immigrant Visa, except Non-immigrant B Visa.
